Maya Banks is a master storyteller who weaves powerfully suspenseful tales with a punch of romance. After devouring the first installment of the Slow Burn series, Keep Me Safe, I knew that In His Keeping (January 2015) would provide an equally intriguing set of characters with an unforgettable story. I wasn’t disappointed!
Arial has lived a privileged yet somewhat limited life. Her parents have taught her from a young age that to keep her secret and herself safe she must never use her powers. Arial has followed their valuable advice without fail. What she didn’t count on was the actions of an angry man and his group of friends and how that would change her life in an instant.
Forced to use her powers to save herself from her attackers she later is shocked to find out the entire incident was recorded and shared with the world. Her long kept secret is out. But the worst is yet to come!
In His Keeping is filled to the brim with moments that truly take your breath away. From chapter one Arial’s life takes you over, bringing you into her world and making you feel the emotional toll it takes on her as she fights her attackers, deals with the loss of her parents, risks life and limb to find and save them, and falls in love along the way. She’s remarkably strong given her upbringing. Banks does a fantastic job balancing her strengths and weaknesses throughout the novel. It was nice watching her open up to Beau Devereaux about her powers as well. That took a great deal of strength and trust.
Beau comes off a tad cold to me in the beginning but given his line of work it makes sense. His attraction to Arial isn’t a shock but the way everything goes down between them is fraught with excitement. He fights for her like he’s known her forever. Their love story is the glue that holds this masterpiece together allowing the darkness of the kidnappers and Arial’s past to be snuffed out with a happily ever after.
I highly recommend Maya Banks’ Slow Burn series to readers who enjoy beautifully told romantic suspense novels that keep you on the edge of your seat. I look forward to diving into the next installment, Safe at Last, which will be published next year.
